What is RCS Messaging?

RCS Messaging provides an improved messaging experience, as long as all chat members support it. Here’s a breakdown of the features:

Features Description
Reactions React to messages with an emoji, like a smiley face.
Group messaging Send messages to a group of up to 100 people.
Emoji, stickers, GIFs  Respond with emojis, stickers, and GIFs to make messages more fun. 
High quality media sharing  Send and receive photos and videos up to 100 MB. 
Report Spam  Report unwanted conversations and contacts as spam, so these messages do not show up on your Home Screen.
Schedule send   Schedule messages to send at a certain time if you want messages to be sent later. 
Starred messages   Keep track of important messages you don’t want to lose.
Message over Wi-Fi  Send messages over Wi-Fi when mobile data is not available. 
Typing indicators   Show others when you’re typing in a conversation with them. 
Read receipts   Let others know you’ve read their messages. 

All iPhones with iOS 18 or later have RCS messaging enabled by default in iMessage.  Key features include:

  • High-Quality Media Sharing: Send clearer, high-resolution images and videos to users on RCS enabled Android devices. 
  • Read Receipts & Typing Indicators: See when Android RCS users are typing or have read your messages. 
  • Reactions & Emojis: React to messages from Android RCS users with emojis, adding interactivity. 
  • Enhanced Group Chats: Name group chats, add/remove members, and message larger groups, even when messaging with Android RCS users. 
  • Wi-Fi Messaging: Keep conversations with Android RCS users going over Wi-Fi, similar to iMessage

Apple’s implementation of RCS is based on the industry’s standard. RCS messages are not end-to-end encrypted, meaning they're not protected from a third-party reading them while they're sent between iOS and Android devices.

How do I get RCS Messaging?
